Production & Field Service Technician $60K-$80K

We are developing computer vision technology which performs in-situ monitoring for industrial 3D printing (additive manufacturing, AM). This technology dramatically changes the metal AM industry by providing immediate component certification and early cancellation of defective builds. Our vision is to provide the additive manufacturing industry with a trusted method to validate part quality in real time.

The Phase3D headquarters is in Chicago, located 5 miles from the Chicago Loop. We work closely with federal scientists and engineers to develop machine vision technology for additive manufacturing (camera and software based). We have established research partnerships with multiple national laboratories, US departments, NASA, and research institutions.

About Phase3D Culture:

Phase3D is currently a small team, comprised of independent thinkers, working to solve challenges in software development, data analysis, mechatronics, electrical engineering, and computer engineering. We are a cross-disciplined group and are excited to be pioneers in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence and machine learning for 3D printing. This is a fast-paced, startup work environment, but with the resources and facilities of a US national Laboratory. This means a lot of variability of workflow and responsibilities, with an emphasis on creative problem solving. You will have the chance to be a part of a team making headlines in the 3D printing world.

About the Role

We are looking for a well-rounded, hands-on candidate to support the production and deployment of Phase3D’s in-situ monitoring systems for additive manufacturing. This role combines production, field service, and operations work. Perfect for someone who enjoys building hardware, traveling to customer sites, and seeing the direct impact of their work in the field.

The Production & Field Service Technician will assemble, pack, ship, test, and help install Phase3D products. You will be responsible for the physical build and validation of electrical assemblies, assisting with internal product testing, managing inventory, and documenting the processes that keep production and installations efficient and repeatable.

This position provides the opportunity to work side-by-side with engineers, contribute directly to the company’s growth, and represent Phase3D during customer installations and training sessions across the country.

Responsibilities

Production and Assembly (30%)

  • Build, pack, ship, and test production electrical assemblies
  • Cut, strip, solder, crimp, and assemble wiring harnesses and components
  • Use standard hand and power tools to complete builds safely and efficiently
  • Perform internal testing of systems and subassemblies before shipment
  • Maintain production quality through documentation and process feedback

Field Service and Installation (50% Enforced)

  • Travel to customer sites for system installation, setup, and training
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting, calibration, and integration with customer hardware
  • Communicate directly with customers to ensure smooth deployment and operation
  • Support the engineering team by identifying field issues and recommending improvements

Operations Support (20%)

  • Assist in inventory management, including part tracking and material readiness
  • Create and update work instructions, installation guides, and process documentation
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Support lean and continuous improvement initiatives within operations

Minimum Education / Certification Requirements

  • Must be U.S. Citizen
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate or associate degree preferred
  • 2–4 years of experience in production, electrical assembly, or field service roles
  • Proficiency in basic electrical assembly techniques (soldering, crimping, wiring, etc.)
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting and logical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically up to 50% of the time

Desired Job Requirements

  • Experience assembling or testing electromechanical systems
  • Familiarity with manufacturing environments and basic inventory control
  • Exposure to lean production principles or continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with remote teams
  • Comfortable with variability in tasks and changing project priorities
  • Enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced startup environment with a small, motivated team

Work Location

Hybrid and flexible options are available, but the role requires presence in Chicago, IL for production work and team collaboration. Travel to customer sites across the U.S. will be required.

Benefits

•    Competitive Salary: $60,000 – $80,000 depending on experience
•    PTO program
•    Mentorship and professional growth opportunities
•    Healthcare coverage premium

First Six Months:

Within the first six months, the candidate will be onboarded, become AM metals customer segment literate, and exercise mastery over the commercial value-add and technical specifications of the products. These goals can be accomplished via 3 main stages.

Month 1

  • Understand Phase3D core technologies, technology roadmap, and business strategy
    • Complete one calibration of the Fringe system at a development partner’s laboratory
    • Install updated metal fixtures in at least 1 partner site
    • Supervise two biweekly tests, supporting developers in troubleshooting tasks
  • Socialize with the cross-functional team, understanding each person’s area of expertise and skills spanning the hardware, software, and product installation activities
    • Take the initiative to schedule a 15 minute meeting with each member of the Phase3D team, including our digital fringe projection expert and our company coach
  • Understand how Phase3D monitoring provides value to research, additive equipment manufacturers, and contract manufacturers
    • Schedule a meeting with Sales to receive a full presentation as if you were a customer
  • Get hands on with the technology, learn how to install and calibrate the system, learn how heightmap readings predict and identify build defects
    • Create a report for a chosen build, identifying interesting defect areas and reporting on them.

Month 2-3

  • Taking initiative to fill gaps in operations that you identify
    • Lead all biweekly test coordination, successfully run 4 biweekly tests and write reports on the results for the slack channel
  • Planning trips and leading system installations at customer facilities
    • Lead the trip planning process for at least 1 installation
  • Build sensor packages and assemble systems with minimal supervision
    • Make 4 trigger cables and maintain stock of 4 trigger cables
